Faculty Lecture: "A World Not Alone—Ethics and Artificial Intelligence”
by Joe Cruz ’91, Williams College Department of Philosophy and Program in Cognitive Science (and husband of Margaret Coady ’95).
Many futurists predict it is very likely that within the lifetime of our grandchildren there will be thinking beings that we have created that exceed us in every measure of cognition. These artificial intelligences will have their own sense of what makes a good world and what world they wish to live in. They will have values and it is overwhelmingly probable that they will be better at achieving their vision than we human beings have ever been. Living alongside AIs will not just be a dazzling technological advancement, it will be a future with ethical and existential dimensions that we have never faced before. The ways we right now shape and anticipate this future has enormous implications for humanity.
