My work as a woodturner has long been a source of philanthropy, benefitting primarily the impoverished and marginalized people of Sudan—a vast country of 43 million people. My primary humanitarian undertaking of late has been to provide psychosocial treatment for the girls and women of Darfur who have been the victims of savage, ethnically-targeted sexual violence over the past 20 years.

The project I began is based in Zamzam camp for internally displaced persons (North Darfur State). Many hundreds of girls (some as young as eight) and women have received life-saving assistance; more than 50 girls and women have benefited from critical reparative surgery for fistulas.

My career began at Williams College, and the impact of this community is still evident in my work.

Great wines make great gifts! As a small production, artisanal winery, we make wines with our hands and our heads, not machines. We farm organically, pick by hand, ferment with native yeast, avoid fining and filtration, and use minimal sulfur. Handcrafting our wines as naturally as possible allows us to capture the exceptional character of the ocean-influenced, mountain vineyards of the Santa Cruz and Gabilan Mountains. Bradley and Wendy Brown '82 lead the small family business, which produces top-rated reds and whites. Big Basin Vineyards was selected in 2021 for the third time by Wine & Spirits Magazine as one of the top 100 wineries in the world. The perfect gift for the wine lovers on your list!

Coffee Uplifts People (CUP)
LaRon Batchelor ’92
LOCATION: Brooklyn, NY
Visit Website | CONTACT: [email protected], (347) 784-4578

We represent a significant point in the coffee industry's evolution and transparency of its origins. With a name like Coffee Uplifts People, we speak more to coffee’s promise than its legacy.

Coffee’s stained history is riddled with everything but upliftment, based on a colonial, slave-built economy that relied on European and American trade with Central and South America, the Caribbean, Asia and Africa. Additionally, from a checkered history of trade exploitation to a more recent symbolization of forthcoming gentrification to inner-city American neighborhoods, the narrative around the coffee cherry that we commercially prize for its bean has come a long way from its beautiful origins in Ethiopia.

Coffee Uplifts People has an ambitious vision to fulfill the promise of coffee within its every touchpoint, from producers, importers, roasters, baristas, consumers and the communities it is consumed within.

Better Than The Gift
Jenny Seed Reis ’96

Jenny Seed Reis is a terrible gift-giver. In order to cover up* her boring gifts, she started designing her own wrapping paper in the hopes that the paper would make people forget the actual item. While researching how to make wrapping paper, she was shocked to discover how wasteful the wrapping paper industry is. Because of this, Jenny made creating an environmentally friendly product a priority. Every decision made, from inks to shipping, is done with the environment in mind.
